2/1/2024 0 Comments Mind meld drawingIn 1949/51 the New York Regency Club wrote the Official Canasta Laws, which were published together with game experts from South America by the National Canasta Laws Commissions of the US and Argentina. It was introduced to the United States in 1949 by Josefina Artayeta de Viel (New York), where it was then referred to as the Argentine Rummy game by Ottilie H. Īfter a positive reception of Canasta at their local bridge club, the Jockey Club, in the 1940s the game quickly spread north throughout South America in myriad variations to Chile, Peru, Brazil and Argentina, where its rules were further refined. They tried different formulas before inviting Arturo Gomez Hartley and Ricardo Sanguinetti to test their game. The game of Canasta was devised by attorney Segundo Sanchez Santos and his Bridge partner, architect Alberto Serrato in Montevideo, Uruguay, in 1939, in an attempt to design a time-efficient game that was as engaging as Bridge. It is "the most recent card game to have achieved worldwide status as a classic". Players attempt to make melds of seven cards of the same rank and "go out" by playing all cards in their hands. Although many variations exist for two, three, five or six players, it is most commonly played by four in two partnerships with two standard decks of cards. Much as each drawing contains a composition of hybridized subjects, Fish plays with recurring imagery throughout the body of work. These symbolically charged images reflect the artist's life, surroundings and interests. In each drawing, objects, animals and places meld into each other creating something new yet eerily familiar. The heart, pierced by an arrow, recalls the love imparted by Eros of Greek mythology while also reminding us that love and vulnerability can lead to pain and death. Heartfelt Hat, depicts a skull wearing a hat emblazoned with a human heart. ![]() These concepts are at the very core of what it means to be alive and therefore what it means to be human. ![]() The human heart, skull and images of Earth are found repeatedly in this body of work, bringing to mind the cycle of birth, reproduction, and death that defines life. I began the work in December 2021, and the themes range from the subjects of love, betrayal, Zodiac signs, hands and feet, hearts and skulls, dead rappers, and my beloved cat Mrs. "This is my favorite medium, and this will be my first show made up entirely of these stark high contrast drawings. Returning to his roots with an exhibition of entirely black and white drawings, Fish draws from a variety of inspirations.
